Biography of Jorge Perez Evelyn
Jorge Perez Evelyn was the first female impersonator in Argentina to achieve public fame in the most difficult political situation of that country, when the rude military government was in power.
Leo Vanes, a
well-known reporter from television, magazines and newspapers was fascinated
with Evelyn, and produced a musical “Las Vegas” style; starring Jorge Perez
Evelyn called “Greenish” with great triumph in early 1974.
It was followed by a second
production called “The Corrientes Avenue Neighbors” in middle year 1974 with great success. (Corrientes
Avenue is the entertainment main venue in Argentina, similar as Broadway is in
New York).
After the prosperous achievements in his career with the two musicals,
Jorge starred a third musical call “A crazy evening” with Alberto Locati, famed
Argentinian comedian and Argentina Trio, dancers of folklore, spectacle that
was shown around the country by the end of 1974.
Argentinian famous producer and visionary Gerardo Sofovich, call Jorge Perez Evelyn to star with Alberto Olmedo a movie and also be the first men vedette to be in the famous Corrientes street in a revue called “Luxury Corrientes” sharing the
stage with the star of the famous “Moulin Rouge” of Paris, France.
This musical established Jorge Perez Evelyn as the blonde bombshell
of the Argentinian travesties. In fact, the musical program was reading as:
“Evelyn, the vedette of the travesties or the King of the vedettes”
(vedette = stars)…
Regarding the movie producers were extremely tempted to bring Jorge
Perez Evelyn to the big screen. A movie named “My girlfriend the travesty” was
ready for Evelyn starring the movie, but there showed up a little problem…with military government in power, the cleric strongly influencing the government as usual with the subject
of family values, the word “travesty” was removed from the title of
the movie.
Then, the military censor loud screamed when finding that the star
of the movie was a "man dressing as a woman" (Evelyn) ….and that the movie was ending in a
happy gay marriage...
Evelyn was removed from the cast and the script was changed to
have what they called a “normal end” (the marriage of a woman and a man)…the
most funny part of all this is that the military censor allowed a woman to
dress as a man…just because at the end of the movie the woman was a real woman
trying to achieve fame saying that was a man, (as Evelyn did in reality). Still
more upsetting, it truly was Jorge Perez Evelyn life, a man dressing as a woman
and accomplishing fame for it.
Jorge Perez the actor, witnessing that the strong military government and
the cleric pressure was never going to allow anything that did not meet the
family stereotype standards that they decided are correct, left the country to never return again in the
middle of his shining career.
It was very painful seeing other travesties, transsexuals
or simply gay or lesbian people being arrested, incarcerated, tortured and
sometimes disappeared from earth just for being LGBT. It was like being in the
medieval inquisition times.
It was a very sad ending that Jorge will never forgive and still
was never repaired or compensate. Jorge Perez the actor always says over and
over again, that he should have born at least a decade later; long after the
military government that ruined is brilliant career was gone.
After receiving a menace left in his dressing room dresser Jorge abandoned the country fearing for his life.
It was when, Joaquin Riviera, famous choreographer of the “Tropicana”
of Havana and producer of musicals in Venezuela, also known for being a miss
universe producer, rescued Jorge Perez Evelyn from agonizing Argentina to shine
again in prosperous Venezuela.
